Welcome to Aspire’s blog, Building Better Workplaces! You’re probably here because you, like us, think there’s a little something you can do to make your workplace just a little happier, a bit more fulfilling, or a smidge more awesome. Together, we will look for that something through posts about the big stuff and the little stuff that make up a workplace – we’ll look at everything from organizational structure and management styles to themed days and compensation. Before we get started though, we wanted to tell you a little about who we are, and why we’re doing what we do.

It wasn’t long ago when a competitive salary and job stability were enough to attract and keep the cream of the crop. But then, along came Google and Facebook with their on-site chefs and rock climbing walls, which (not surprisingly) changed employees’ expectations about the perfect job.

Let’s ignore the 0.0001% of companies who can offer campuses of perks. Those companies have it made when it comes to talent recruitment and retention. The rest of us have to look for unique and cost-efficient ways to build out an employment value proposition that stands out from the competition (consultant jargon for “why would employees want to work for me instead of my arch nemesis?”). All you need to do is make sure all of your managers are rockstars with great personalities, your vision inspires your workforce day in and day out, and everyone has ample growth opportunities to achieve their full potential within your company. Easy enough, right?

The battle doesn’t end there anymore. The managers, mission, and professional development of a company are undoubtedly the biggest pieces, but that doesn’t mean they cover everything. There are a lot of factors that define a company, some that are fundamental and others that make a company stand out from the crowd. At Aspire, we’re looking for ways to help you stand out from the crowd. Think about it like this:

You are planning a barbecue for the big game on Sunday. You don’t want this to be just any barbecue; you are ready to end the debate and be crowned the grillmaster amongst your friends. So you go to the best butcher in town to get your meat, stock your fridge with your crew’s favorite drinks, and set up the surround-sound system so you can hear the game anywhere in the house (that’s right – anywhere). That’s pretty great, but it might not win you the coveted crown. To really close the deal, you need to do something a little different and a little out of the box. So you whip up a batch of your mama’s famous barbecue sauce.

The meat, beer, and TV are the essentials. You can’t have a successful barbecue if you’re missing any one of those items. And you have to do them right. But your family’s secret barbecue sauce is what makes your barbecue unforgettable.

A company’s culture, perks, and benefits are like the barbecue sauce. You could just pick up some brand name bottle at the grocery store, and that would get the job done. But if all you wanted was average, then why bother going to the best butcher in town?

At Aspire, we help create unforgettable experiences at your company. We help you build a better workplace.
